AWPA Summer Athletes Academy

The Alberta Water Polo Association is pleased to announce our first ever Summer Water Polo Academy! Always striving for innovative and dynamic ways to connect our water polo community in Alberta, the AWPA has created a virtual eight-week program designed to support athlete development. While in-water training plays a major role in the development of water polo players, athletes will find that time away from the pool focusing on other training elements will help them develop into well-rounded athletes in all areas of their game.
The 2020 Athlete Academy will target athletes born in 2007 and earlier. Athletes will be split into groups of less than 20 athletes in order to ensure all athletes receive individualized feedback and the opportunity to engage in each lesson. Sessions will run for two hours on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon/evening with athletes taking two “classes” (1 hour per class) each day. In addition to the weekly sessions, the program will include a special session every other Wednesday where all Academy participants will get to hear from a diverse range of guest speakers.
Duration: June 23 - August 13, 2020(Tuesday/Thursday sessions weekly, Wednesday sessions bi-weekly) All classes will take place between the hours of 3:00pm and 6:00pm. A detailed schedule will be provided to all participants once registration is confirmed.
Cost: $265.00Legacy and RDC Athlete Cost: $215.00** All Athletes must be actively registered with an Alberta club.
Age Groups: 14U, 16U, 19U (DOB 2007 and earlier)Current Post Secondary Athletes and Alberta Alumni are invited to attend free of charge with approval.
Registration Deadline: June 14th, 2020
Equipment: All athletes will receive an Academy t-shirt and workbook with registration. Additionally athletes will require the following items:
-Water Polo Ball (or similar sized ball)-Resistance Band-Zoom Profile
If Alberta progresses through the various stages of its relaunch strategy and different activities can be re-introduced in a safe manner, we may be able to reschedule zoom sessions to include some face to face social distancing sessions. All guidelines and restrictions in place by the Alberta government will be closely monitored and followed. These would include outdoor cross training sessions.
